It’s staggering to find that around 4% of the world’s population suffer from Bipolar Disorder, formerly known as Manic Depression. It is the sixth leading cause of medical disability worldwide among people 15 to 44 years of age, and is associated with a greater degree of disability than a number of prominent chronic medical conditions, including osteoarthritis, HIV infection, diabetes, and asthma.

Local businesses have been eagerly throwing their support behind the expedition in a bit to make a difference to this condition that affects so many people’s day-to-day lives.

Photo on the left is Jason and Steven awaiting the auction to sell Blue Towers seen in the background. Bidders for the painting were unexpectadly offered a matching peice to complete the set of 2 paintings. The winning bidder was Bruce Tame from Remax Central in Woolloongabba.
Joshua Collings, from Woolangabba art gallery Joshua Levi Galleries, says “Jason is doing an amazing thing to raise money for this cause. How many people do you know that would endure blistering minus forty-degree conditions in order to raise some money for charity? He’s going where few have dared to go before, and that's why we’re doing all we can to support him.”

Artist contributing to this cause are….
Nic Plowman, Emma Shelldrake, Steven Dix
Vitor Dos Santon, Maryanne Oliver, Tracey Keller
Kylie Faralley, Kelvin Hawley , Nadine Sawyer
Andrew Trimmer, Joshua Levi + many more

Joshua Levi Galleries hosted ‘The Bipolar Art Auction’ on September 27th in a bid to help Jason raise some much-needed funds for the expedition. “As I’m sure you can imagine an adventure like this doesn’t come easily, especially for a student.” States Mr. Hawley. “Hopefully with a little help from the local community, I’m sure I can make it there!” He went onto say “I believe that the expedition will be an awesome adventure that really parallels the extremes of the disorder and will show that people suffering from this mental illness can not only lead normal lives, but can go on to do extraordinary things.”

Jason is a member of The Bipolar Expedition, an expedition that will see teams walk the ‘last degree’ in both hemispheres in order to raise money for research grants into bipolar, and help reduce the public stigma associated with the mental illness. “Every participant on the expedition has been affected by bipolar in some way,” says Mr Hawley. “Be that they are directly suffering from the condition, working in the mental health sector, or having a close friend or family member affected by the disease. For me, losing my uncle earlier this year to the illness made a huge impact on me.”

Smoke was rising from John Penders hands as the Blue Towers donated by Steve Dix went for $1000, all proceeds going to the Expedition expenses and with any luck some serious media coverage.
